XT Paint Sprayer
Application
For almost 100 years, Graco has been the trusted name in fluid handling systems and equipment. As the market leader in professional painting equipment, Graco serves contractors across residential, commercial, and industrial applications worldwide. When developing the next generation of airless sprayers, Graco turned to ETM, now the electric motor division of Graco, to pioneer a motor specifically designed for the unique demands of airless spray applications.
Products used: Transverse Flux Motor (TFM) Technology
Industry: Professional Painting Equipment
Challenge
Graco sought a motor solution that could eliminate gear reduction systems, provide precise pressure control across an unprecedented range, and dramatically reduce noise—all while simplifying the overall sprayer design for easier manufacturing and field maintenance.
Results
Built on ETM’s proprietary Transverse Flux Motor (TFM) technology, Graco integrated the Xtreme Torque Motor—the first motor ever designed specifically for airless spray applications. The XT motor delivers 15 times more torque than traditional brushless motors, enabling direct drive to the sprayer’s piston pump without any gear reduction.
- Simplified design accelerates development and reduces complexity
- Wide application versatility from a single platform
- Rapid prototyping enables faster innovation cycles

Nordicco hVLS Fans
Application
An HVLS fan is a large ceiling fan that moves a High Volume of air at a Low Speed. The low speed delivers gentle air movement rather than disruptive wind, and circulating a high volume of air effectively distributes airflow over a large area.
Key Customer Goals
Get rid of the noisy, heavy, inefficient gearbox. Stand out in a crowded marketplace by becoming the first HVLS fan manufacturer to offer direct drive solutions for fans size 16 ft and above.
Problems solved by ETM Technology
- Quieter
- Eliminated the gearbox and drastically reduced bearings from 6 to 2.
- Lighter
- 3-6x smaller and lighter than the competitive motor.
- SKU Reduction
- Component SKUs reduced from 5 motors and 11 gearboxes to just 3 ETM motors.
- Less Maintenance
- Fewer parts and no gearbox to maintain.

Peristaltic Pumps
Application
Peristaltic pumps are a type of positive displacement pump used for pumping a variety of fluids. The fluid is contained within a flexible tube fitted inside a circular pump housing. A rotor with a number of rollers compresses the flexible tube. As the rotor turns, the part of the tube under compression is pinched closed thus forcing the fluid to move through the tube.
Key Customer Goals
Peristaltic pumps require relatively high torque at low rotational speeds, typically in the range of 5 to 500 RPM, well below the direct drive capability for conventional AC or DC motors. As a result, conventional motors are operated at a higher speed (over 1000 rpm) and a speed reduction gearbox is necessary to achieve the required torque and rotational speed. These geared drive systems are large, heavy, inefficient and the gearbox increases cost while causing a reliability and maintenance burden.
Problems solved by ETM Technology
- Lighter, Quieter, and more Compact
- Eliminated the need for a gearbox, reducing weight by 78% and overall length of power train from 16 in (400mm) in length to 6 in (150mm).
- Higher Efficiency
- Compared to the AC geared system, power consumption is reduced 29-54% for the ETM direct drive system.
- Increased Operating Range
- ETM Direct Drive systems operate at higher continuous loads compared to much larger, heavier AC geared systems.
- Improved Reliability and Maintenance
- ETM Direct Drive Systems have a single moving part, the motor rotor, which enables greater reliability, reduced maintenance and reduced noise.

Precision Conveyors
Application
Conveyors move both large and small objects at relatively slow speeds, with frequent starts and stops. They require high torque to accelerate to full speed quickly and smoothly.
Key Customer Goals
Incorporate a direct drive motor solution that reduces the overall drive system cost. Eliminate the need for the gearbox due to its poor reliability and lower efficiency, which have a negative impact on the customer experience.
Problems solved by ETM Technology
- Reduced Inventory Costs
- One ETM motor can replace eight conventional motors and 42 motor/gear combinations.
- Improved Efficiency
- ETM Motors can operate over 92% efficiency and require no gearbox, reducing energy losses by 60-80% so the motor runs cooler.
- Improved Reliability
- ETM’s direct drive motor delivers a higher MTBF by eliminating the gear box and reducing the number of moving parts.
- Lower Drive System Costs
- ETM motors eliminate the gearbox reducing the drive system cost.
